Background
Dr. Matthew E. Sprong is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Doctor of Public Administration (DPA) program in the School of Public Management & Policy at University of Illinois Springfield. He earned his PhD in Rehabilitation and M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling & Administration (specialization in Addiction Studies) from Southern Illinois University of Carbondale. His professional experience has included providing direct mental health care (vocational rehabilitation and clinical rehabilitation) to Veterans enrolled in VA Healthcare and has served in leadership capacities as a Supervisor and Health System Specialist (HHS) – Facility Strategic Planner at the VA Illiana Health Care System.
As a Supervisor of the Vocational Rehabilitation program, he was responsible for adhering to CARF and Joint Commission Standards, providing program administration, personnel management, direct patient care, and budgeting/financial duties. Other professional experiences include program evaluation (community-rehabilitation program), and providing mental health/SUD counseling, forensic vocational rehabilitation consulting, and life-care planning. He has testified in 8000+ Administrative Law Hearings with the Social Security Administration (Voc. Expert).
He has 50+ peer-reviewed journal article publications, has been involved in leadership roles within the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals (IARP), the Vocational Evaluation and Work Adjustment Association (VEWAA); and, has received several international and national awards for his service, leadership, or his scholarly activities.
